Removing Algae from your Fountain
Stacked Triangles Floor Fountain
If you smell something bad while having a cup of coffee or a tea near your outdoor water fountain, algae must have growing in it. Hence, a thorough cleaning must be done to prevent further algae build up.

The first thing to do is consult the booklet when you bought the water fountain. Proper cleaning should be observed to avoid damaging your fountain. If the booklet is not available, you may contact the supplier to give you the details. Remember that water fountains are made of different materials and trying to remove stubborn algae might cause other damage.

Simply unplug the pump and drain the fountain. Using a rag, wipe all surfaces including the pump. A pipe cleaner should be handy to remove the algae inside the tubing and spouts. These algae will clog the smooth flow of the water.

Ordinary dish soap can be used in cleaning the fountain but be sure to thoroughly rinse it out with fresh water. Commonly used gentle solution is white vinegar. Small and detachable parts can be soaked with the solution to remove stubborn algae. However, for large and not detachable parts, place the rags soaked in the solution on the affected portions for ten minutes or so.

Anti-algae water treatment can also be used to help prevent the growth of algae. You may use a mixture of 1/4 cup bleach to five gallons of water to clean the algae from the system only if the manufacturer approves of it.

Many fountain care products are available in the market. This does not make cleaning unnecessary but you may be able to go longer between cleanings.
